Health And Fitness Writer Content Guidelines

Health and fitness writing can be described by many as a “rabbit hole”. As you get “deeper” down the rabbit hole, things get more complicated. Here’s an image to further explain the concept.

fitness blogging job

As you can see, there are four layers to the fitness writing rabbit hole. Each layer describes a type of content, or “writing style”.

Actionable

Actionable content is the upper-most part of the rabbit hole of writing. As people start exercising and trying to look better, they typically start looking for information that can be applied immediately.

How-to’s, exercise videos/demonstrations, recipes, meal plans, and supplements are typically what people search for when they’re getting started.

Informative

Informative content explains more about “why” you should be using a certain piece of actionable content.

A common example is telling people they need to lift more weight. Lifting more weight will make you stronger, which will help you build muscle faster, which will make you look better. With this example, you could reference progressive overload.

Further explaining progressive overload would be considered “scholarly”, so don’t get too “dry” with the details.

Scholarly

This information is typically more informative than “informative” content. Scholarly content references scientific principles like above, but gets much more into detail about them.

Scholarly content can be an entire guide on progressive overload, instead of just mentioning it. Here, there’s a lot more information about “why” you need to do something, instead of just suggesting something should be done.

Some scholarly content is acceptable for Tone Body Fitness, but most of it will likely be edited out, and replaced with a link to something relevant.

For example, if you start discussing dozens of training variables and how to progress them, in a guide about “how to leg press”, I’ll probably delete it and reference someone else’s blog on training variables.

Skeptical

Skeptical content typically requires a vast understanding of scientific principles to be able to comprehend. Skeptical writers tend to get deep into the “nitty gritty” science to explain very specific details.

Often times this information isn’t immediately actionable. It is useful, though, because it can change how you think about actionable content.

However, skeptical content has no purpose on Tone Body Fitness. The readers I’m targeting won’t be able to handle this level of information.

What Is Your Objective As A Fitness Writer For Tone Body Fitness?

Your objective as a fitness writer for Tone Body Fitness is to create content that is “actionable” and “informative”, but mostly actionable.

While there is a massive need for “scholarly” and “skeptical” content, it is outside the scope of this website. There is still a need for good surface level content that points people in the right direction. This is opposed to bad surface level content, such as something like “Top 10 exercise to burn belly fat”.

I do request, though, that you reference material that is informative and scholarly. This way, if our readers want to explore “deeper down the rabbit hole”, the references for them to do so are available.

For example, if you need to mention progressive overload to make your point, briefly introduce the concept of progressive overload, and give the reader a link to a blog about progressive overload that explains it in more detail. This keeps the content on Tone Body Fitness “actionable”, as well as intellectually honest.

That is my goal for this website. I want to provide easy to digest information, that references “deeper” information for people who want to learn more.
